1st hour:

Yining Han 韓一甯 delved into Ji Kang’s theses regarding the relationship between music and emotions, exploring the idea that music is irrelevant to grief or joy and the implications this has for the aesthetics of qin music (嵇康 聲無哀樂對琴美學的影響). Yining accompanied his talk with performances of one of Ji Kang’s qin compositions (in bold), known as the Four Melodies of Ji Kang: Changqing, Duanqing, Changce, and Duance. (嵇康四弄: 長清, 短清, 長側, 短側. long piece in Qing mode, short piece in Qing mode, long piece in Ce mode and short piece in Ce mode.)

President Peiyou Chang expressed deep gratitude to both speakers for providing such enriching content, and extended appreciation to everyone for participating in both thoughtful and heartfelt discussions. She announced that the next yaji will be held on Sunday, June 16th.

Peiyou also introduced a new member candidate, Dr. Danny Wongworawat 黃健盛 (https://montriwongworawat.com/profession/). Danny Wong, from California, is a hand surgeon with medical training and publications, and he also has interests in music and miniature plants. Additionally, he is skilled in making and repairing instruments. In June’s yaji, Danny will share his insights on considerations regarding the structure and restoration of the qin.

Peiyou also warmly welcomed Нина Старостина (Nina Starostina) from Moscow, who is a music composer and learned the guqin from Master Li Feng Yun 20 years ago. Nina was introduced to the NY Qin Society by the vice president, André Ribeiro.
