The NYQS gathering on Nov. 8th, 2015, began with a PowerPoint lecture by Master Jung-Ping Yuan, founding president of the New York Qin Society. Jung-Ping was visiting from Taiwan, where he also founded the 中華古琴學會 China Guqin Society and is founder and director of the 臺北琴道舘 Taipei Qin Hall.
題目:琴音與指法、樂句與段落的關係
English Title: From Note to Structure: Key Elements of Guqin Music
Attendance
John Thompson, Peiyou Chang, Marilyn Wong, Yuni Han, Henry Chan, Jung-ping Yuan, Ralph Knag, Stephen Dydo and guests Tiffany Du and Hongmei Zhang.
Jung-ping discussed playing techniques. He talked about song structures of various types. He emphasized the importance of deeply understanding the notated finger technique when learning a piece; playing should not be free form – there’s a lot to be learned from the notation. Even rhythm can be learned from the fingering.
This was followed by qin playing, further discussion, and, of course, food.
Jung-Ping introduced his new 清明絲絃 Qingming Qin Strings.
Topics of discussion included whether when doing dapu (learning music from tablature rather than from a teacher) one should follow the tablature precisely, in particular to what extent one should or should not add ornaments such as vibrato or slides if the notation does not specifically indicate them.
Master Yuan played Xiao Xiang Shui Yun 瀟湘水雲
Peiyou played Liezi Rides on The Wind 列子御風
For comparison, John played part of the earliest surviving version,
from Shen Qi Mi Pu (1425)
Founding member Marilyn Wong Gleysteen with three
generations of NYQS presidents: founding president,
Jung-Ping Yuan; his successor, Stephen Dydo;
and the 3rd and current president. John Thompson.
When John played Autumn Evening Moon Walk
(Qiu Xiao Bu Yue 秋宵步月 1525), his latest dapu,
he kept his transcription in front of him for reference.
