6, Andrea Lioy. I was born and raised in Italy. I started working for a theater company in my teens. My dream was to become a playwright, so I was working odd jobs backstage during the day and writing at night. At some point, a producer liked one of my plays and staged it. It was successful enough for me to be commissioned to write three more. I moved to London in the mid-1990s to pursue further education, getting as far as an MA in Communication Design and an MA in Japanese Cultural Studies. In the academic year 2005-6, I began teaching writing to visual artists and formed a Creative Writing Workshop that is still running today.
I started studying Guqin in mid-2019 — almost three years into it. I can tell you it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life among many bad ones. Next step: learn to make Guqins.
Other relevant data: I love cinnamon donuts. Whoever buys me a cinnamon donut has my heart forever. I occasionally collaborate with a university in China. You can find some notes about my work here: http://www.dlpu.edu.cn/detail/22/8e8cc3633f8e9d4025b776ef221ee13a.html

14, Jane Huang. I was born in China, but my family moved to Taiwan when I was one year old. Taiwan offered me a sound education and a happy childhood, for which I am very grateful. After graduating from college, I came to the United States to attend graduate school. I had planned on getting a business degree, but the language barrier kept me from reaching that goal. I changed my major to mathematics and received a MS degree in Statistics. Throughout my career, I worked closely with mainframe computers, and retired in 2004.
My interests include birding, photography, and traveling. I play a little piano. No longer classical, only pop music. My mother left me a Guqin. The shield of tuning pegs was cracked. I contacted Taiwan Guqin Association for information with regard to a restoration. Mr. Cheng Hui-de came highly recommended. Mr. Cheng would restore the Guqin for me only if I learned to play it. It took Mr. Cheng five weeks using the period method and material to restore the instrument to its original glory. No words can express my gratitude to him.
I had started out taking some group lessons from 王菲 in Fremont, CA. In the summer of 2018, at a music school in San Francisco ChinaTown, I learned that Alan Yip offered Guqin lessons. Thanks to Alan’s infinite patience, I am still hanging around and having fun.
15, Susannah Miller. I am currently a paralegal in Seattle, and I have degrees in linguistics and philosophy. I began playing cello and piano as a young child, which seemed like it would be quite useful when learning to play qin. However, although it trained my ear and sense of rhythm, it also trained me to play everything with a Western classical interpretation—playing guqin has been both a learning and an un-learning experience! I have been studying qin with Alan Yip since 2020.
16, Alan Yip grew up in Southern California where he studied erhu under acclaimed maestro, He Wangbao. With two decades of erhu performance experience, Alan Yip has actively delved into many regional and contemporary styles of playing, ranging from solo instrumental, orchestral, ensemble, to traditional Cantonese music and Cantonese opera.
Intrigued by its sound and history, Alan Yip began his studies of guqin as a pupil of famed pipa and guqin virtuoso, Lui Puiyuen. Eager to broaden his technique and aesthetics on guqin, he has since studied under leading masters as Gong Yi, Wu Ziying, Chen Changlin, and Dai Xiaolian. He has been invited to numerous concerts in such countries as the USA, China, and Malaysia, and is an active promoter of Chinese music in the U.S. and abroad. Besides Chinese classical music, he has studied Chinese court-style painting under the tutelage of Puxian Aisin-Gioro – cousin of the last emperor of China, Puyi. Alan holds a Master’s degree in Horticulture and Agronomy from the University of California, Davis.
Alan is currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area and is musical instruments consultant to @fineguqins.
17, John Thompson, former President of the New York Qin Society, began in 1974 to study qin in Taiwan from Sun Yü-Ch’in, then while living in Hong Kong from 1976 to 2001 began reconstructing old melodies from Ming dynasty handbooks, in particular Shen Qi Mi Pu (1425) and Xilutang Qintong (1525). He moved to New York in 2001, returned to Asia (Mumbai and Singapore) from 2009 to 2013, then came back to New York in 2013, all the time continuing his project of qin performance and research. His website, www.silkqin.com, with over 150 recordings of his reconstructions from Ming dynasty scores plus a wealth of related information about the qin, focuses on “historically informed qin performance” (requiring use of silk strings and accurate descriptions of historical details), and is arguably the richest resource for information on the qin on the Internet.
