- This yaji was a continuation on the subject of Guqin learning since last year in July and earlier this year in January. Last year in July, Shuishan, Alan, Juni, Mingmei and Peiyou all shared some thoughts about guqin learning. And this January, Jim also shared interesting stories he had with Master Wang Huade 王華德 and Master Li Ming Zhong 李明忠. You can check all the records on our website under Events in 2022 and 2021. Last July, Peiyou talked about [The Path of My Qin Learning] and mentioned a guqin exam from Master Yuan JP’s Chinese Guqin Association in Taipei. There were 4 points to examine a qin performance, which are:
- 形、Appearance, stage manner. 質、Music integrity (the state of being whole) , Left and Right hand techniques. 藝、Rhythm accuracy; Variation of tempo; Pitches accuracy; Tone color expression, Volume control. And 道、Meaning of the music, Feeling of the music, Expression beyond the sound. Peiyou found that it is a very good guideline for qin students to pay attention to while learning the guqin.
- April 3rd, 2022 in Chinese culture was the Double Third Festival 上巳節, also known as Shangsi Festival, or Spring purification festival which is celebrated on the third day of the third month of the Chinese calendar. Because of this special date, our correspondent secretary, the co-host, Marilyn was planning to introduce the Spring purification festival and its relation to poetry, calligraphy and painting. Due to running out of time, Marilyn’s talk will be postponed to the next yaji.

Hu Yi 胡昳 started learning the guqin in 2007 with Miss Xu Bi from Shanghai Yuan Yin Qin Yuan 上海元音琴苑 until 2014 to prepare to study abroad. 2011-2012 Yi worked at the Shanghai Yuan Yin Qin Yuan, and was also helped by the following qin teachers: Hu Ying Kun, Zhang Da, Gao Xin and Gu Jian Feng.

Jenny Chen 陳稚 started her guqin journey in 2011. Since then, she has studied the guqin on and off with Mr. Zhong Zhiyue 鍾之岳(Singapore) and subsequently Ms. Liu Li 劉麗 (NY) from 2014.

Michael Bretti attended our yaji in 2016 (https://newyorkqin.com/9-july-2016/) and presented his research on different strings and development of his own synthetic guqin strings. 化纖琴弦的研究. This time he is going to talk about his most ambitious instrument project yet. He wanted to create a highly unique and personal master-grade instrument that he will be able to grow with for years.
